Connection issue with Ethernet interface
Connection issue with Ethernet interface
Hello, your internet connection has stopped working this morning. You were playing games last night without any problems. Since then, the PC won’t connect at all and you’re seeing "Unidentified network - No internet." Your WiFi is functioning properly, but the router light near the Ethernet port flickers intermittently. The lights on your PC change unpredictably—sometimes just green, sometimes both colors, sometimes none. The computer screen displays the same message each time. I swapped another router and it behaved similarly. Using an Ethernet to USB adapter helped, and the IP address assigned is 169.254.205.1, which suggests a handshake problem. You confirmed DHCP was set to automatic, and you tried updating network drivers, but they’re from 2015. Windows received updates earlier this week and again last night before your gaming session. Do you think this is caused by software or hardware? Are there other steps you can take to fix the issue?
Consider the most probable cause and explore alternatives, such as another version or adjusting driver settings. Disabling driver signature checks might assist. A system rollback prior to the update could also be an option if available. It's possible hardware issues exist, though I haven't experienced a faulty Ethernet port before.
169.254.X.X/16 is a self-assigned IP address provided by Windows. It indicates the system sent a DHCP request but received no response, so it assigned itself an IP to communicate with other devices. I’d inspect the cables, switch ports, and consider switching to another operating system just to rule out a simple misconfiguration.
It seems the connection to the wired internet worked, but the web pages didn’t load. I had a standard IP address and could ping the router. Now I’m stuck trying to access anything online. This is quite frustrating. I just restarted my Ubuntu download and will try again soon.
I turned off the device to maintain a stable WiFi connection for downloading Ubuntu. After reconnecting, it continues the same process. When I plug the cable back in, it repeatedly attempts to connect but keeps failing. It seems the device might succeed after about 20-30 minutes without DNS resolution. I plan to start Ubuntu now and observe the outcome.
I expected a problem with Ubuntu, but everything worked perfectly. Wish I could have stayed on Linux if it weren’t for my job needs.
Things are getting even weirder. Now after booting on Windows everything seems to be back to normal. I also tried rebooting and plugging/unplugging the cable to see if it would fuck up again but apparently it's not. I have no idea what happened or if it's a coincidence but it seems like booting on Linux "fixed" the issue. It's still even more frustrating in some way to not be able to reproduce the issue. I work remotely and I really hope it won't happen again on a Monday morning or during a meeting.
