Hello. Over the last couple of days I've experienced this issue. Usually I'm just browsing YouTube and other sites, but without any obvious reason I lose connection between my PC and monitor. I have to restart frequently to restore functionality, though sometimes it doesn't work. I've tried keeping the computer idle and it still behaves the same. The timing isn't consistent—it might happen within the first minute of use or after about 15 minutes. So far I've done: updating video drivers, re-seating the display cable from both GPU and monitor, checking the GPU power cable and motherboard connection, testing on another PC which works, and monitoring temperatures which are normal. No new software installed recently, no hardware changes. I also attempted a BIOS update while writing this, but it caused the system to fail at the BIOS menu and now I'm trying to reset the motherboard BIOS version again. My current OS is Windows 10 64-bit with these specs: Ryzen 5600X 3.7 GHz, Asus Strix 1060 6GB RAM, 2x Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB DDR4 at 3600MHz, CL18, MSI B550-A Pro BIOS (version E7C56AMS.AA0 before update).
Try launching a different OS such as GNU/Linux or openBSD/freeBSD to determine if the problem lies with hardware, firmware, or Windows. Verify your GPU can handle the video mode you're attempting (640x640 at 60Hz typically works, but 1920x1080 may be challenging on modern GPUs). Alternatively, test another monitor if available. As noted earlier, software corruption can occur unexpectedly, particularly on Windows.
ChuckFeed’s advice applies to that case too. It probably relates to software or your video setup—like the dGPU or iGPU, the connection, the cable, the monitor port, or the screen itself. Hardware options tend to be costly, which isn’t ideal, so opting for hardware is better. Another tip is to check your motherboard manual for the initial startup key; if you reach BIOS, it’s software-related. If not, it’s hardware. A post code should exist if it isn’t displaying anything. It's important to note that I was attempting to refresh my bios information while the connection was active. After that, the display would disconnect again, and I couldn't access the bios menu afterward. When I powered the PC on, the CPU indicator lit up on the motherboard briefly before the RAM activated for a short moment. After removing both RAM sticks, the motherboard lights continued to illuminate through the CPU and remained active at the DRAM light.
I’ve successfully flashed the BIOS and booted into Windows. I expect to spend roughly ten hours assembling everything again, since I won’t be home. My goal is to reinstall the latest BIOS compatible with my motherboard and then check if the issue continues.
In short, the issue started when the screen went off on the computer. The only solution was a full restart, which didn’t always succeed. I updated the BIOS through MSI’s menu but it caused another restart during installation and made the display completely disappear. I tried reseating the CMOS battery and shorting it, but that didn’t help. After searching online, I found an older BIOS version on a USB drive and used it in the USB quick boot while no RAM sticks were present, which worked fine. I’m not sure what caused it, but I know you should use the latest BIOS. For now, I can’t risk changing anything on my main computer. Thanks for the advice.
