Connecting to Plex server from outside your home network
When I'm at home and navigate to the remote access section on my Plex server, the red alert instantly changes to a green confirmation. Yet sometimes I still need to click the tab for the external IP to complete the resolution. I'm not sure if this is because my ISP's public IP shifts occasionally. Would using the dynamic DNS feature on my modem help resolve this issue?
Generally, networking involves a dynamic IP at home. You can use a dynamic DNS service built into your router to work around this. To reach your server, replace the hostname or IP with the DDNS address you purchase, but this comes with costs and extra steps once set up. Plex likely requires forwarding certain ports, so assign an internal IP (like 192.168.0.110) for your Plex server in your router and forward those ports accordingly. You should be all set.
While dealing with this problem, I needed to carefully review my port forwarding settings. Plex is quite strict about open ports. My internet service provider usually doesn’t alter my public IP too often. I’ve been using the same IP address for the past two years.
The frequency of IP changes differs widely. Some users have retained the same IP for months, while others see it shift daily. Services like No IP can resolve these problems, but proper port forwarding through your router’s firewall remains essential. There appears to be a Plex setting that allows access outside the network—something I encountered during installation and decided not to activate.
The issue persists when using a VPN, which is something I'm encountering.
