I was dealing with a slow, old router that ran old software. That was likely the main problem from the start.

I'm back at work, so I'll leave it here now. Right now I've reconnected the NAS to my main modem and plan to use a long Ethernet cable for data transfers instead of Wi-Fi (the average speed there is 30MB/s).
