I checked my PC and found the CPU connector with 8 pins, but only 4 pins from my PSU are connected. It’s functioning well. My questions: a) Is it possible to run the CPU with just 4 pins instead of 8? b) Would upgrading to an 8-pin PSU harm the system? Specs: Core i7-4790, 3.6GHz, Gigabyte H97-HD3, 16GB RAM, DDR3 GTX 1060, 6GB SSD, 6GB HDD at 6GB/s.

When the motherboard features just four pins, an eight-pin CPU is also referred to as 4+4. It’s built to divide the pins, meaning only four can be utilized if the board only supports a four-pin CPU connector.
