Connect to potential data drop events – happening unpredictably
I recently constructed a gaming server and hosted a modified Minecraft server for a few friends. The connection has worked well for about three weeks without issues. Recently, all my friends started getting sudden ping spikes, causing delays of 10 to 20 seconds for any input. I suspect packet loss might be the cause. Two friends from Texas and Florida ran a pingplotter test and shared their results. My ISP is Spectrum, paying for a 1Gbit connection that appears stable. I also have an TP-link 8-Port Gigabit switch (TL-SG108) to expand Ethernet ports. Here are my specs: an i5 6500 @ 3.40GHz, 32GB DDR4 @ 3200Mhz RAM, 430W PSU, 500GB SSD, and the CPU usage is around 15-20%.
The graphs were likely created on the server while your friends faced the problem. A latency of around 80ms doesn't reflect their experience. Additional considerations: Is the server running on Windows? Are you certain no other programs are using the network? Windows Update is known for this issue, especially with automatic updates. Are any BitTorrent clients active in the background? Could others be using your network simultaneously—perhaps streaming or downloading which might disrupt the connection?
