I thought it would be straightforward, but I’m running into some issues. I have two devices connected to my network—PC1 is linked via Ethernet, and PC2 is connected through Wi-Fi. My goal is to access PC2’s files directly from PC1 without using remote access. There are a few complications: the share button in the properties menu appears grayed out, and when trying to connect to PC2, it prompts for credentials even though I don’t have one set up. Both machines use local accounts, and PC2 doesn’t require a password. It only has music and DRM-free games. When attempting to transfer files using File Explorer between the two PCs, I’m encountering authentication errors despite having no credentials configured. I’ve tried empty fields for both username and password, but nothing works. I’m frustrated because it feels like I’m not getting the expected functionality, especially with the new 3100Mbps modem offering fast speeds.

The system has rules that prevent direct connections without a password. It seems they set this for security reasons. You might need to create a password on the second device and try again. Also, confirm if you have permission to access both accounts.

Adjust the password for the local account. Then you should be able to reach the share with your admin credentials for the pc2 IIRC. For instance, create a shortcut on your desktop like \\192.168.1.89 (PC2's IP address). The remaining step is enabling network discovery in the Control Panel—Network and Internet, then Advanced sharing settings.
