Hello everyone, I'm trying to figure out which RAM to choose for my Ryzen 7 2700 (non X). I got it for free from a family member and want something fast and reliable. The CL 14, 16, 18, 3200, 3400, and 3600 MHz models are a bit confusing. The cheapest option I saw is this Amazon link: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B07RM39V5F/ref=...K0QF8N77YM. I think it's CL 18, but I've heard some videos suggesting 18 is less good for games compared to others. I won't be overclocking the CPU or RAM, so I just need something stable for gaming and some video/photo editing. I don't have a motherboard yet, but I'm not sure if that affects this RAM discussion.
Choose 3200Mhz CL16 for maximum performance if you ignore percentage gains, opt for 3200Mhz CL14 to skip manual tuning and get a bit more sound, but be prepared for inconsistent speed improvements. Hit or miss in MHz gains—IMCs from Zen were rarely impressive.
I wouldn't push memory too far for that chip. It's a great CPU, but it doesn't handle high-speed stability very well.
Understand that the board choice will influence your performance outcomes. I’m able to use my sticks up to around 3333 with the 2700X in this board (X470 Tachi Ultimate) without issues, though I tend to stop higher. Using the same sticks, I can chip and set up a top 3600 with stock timings using G. Skill Flares (3200/CL14). What others and I have observed is that ASRock boards, especially those I’m familiar with, don’t excel at clocking sticks quickly. However, the X570 boards might be different, though I haven’t heard much about them yet. Also, this discussion involves newer chipset generations than the X470 lineup. The B550 boards also perform well and should work similarly, though compatibility might vary. A 4 series board could still handle it, and they’re more affordable. Be selective, compare compatibility with your chips and sticks, and you’ll find the right setup.
Thanks for your support! The 3600 cl 18 Ram offers the best value, though I might switch if issues arise. The A B450 Tomahawk costs around 70 and most B550 boards are priced higher than 120. Gaming performance with the 550 model is still a consideration.
No matter which board you choose, avoid Corsair with Ryzen, especially the "Vengeance" models. This usually leads to trouble. A solid CL16 setup is affordable, and a 3600W power supply should cover your needs. A 3200W unit works just as well. Most recommendations suggest around 16GB, but aiming for 32GB is ideal if you can afford it.
I need to choose Corsair Vengeance since it's the only option I can afford right now. The G skill version is about 60 dollars more, so yeah RIP. On the other hand, the person who gave me the CPU says they use the same memory and never had issues, so I hope it works out. I'm also planning to get an AIO (Artic Liquid Freezer 2) for future upgrades, like the motherboard. OH BOY, I picked a B450 tomahawk 2—it's 60 dollars cheaper than a 550 and looks better than a budget 550. Does this affect game performance? I've seen videos showing around a 5/10 fps difference between 450 and 550, but I'm not sure.
