How to prevent problems during your upgrade?
I’m preparing to switch from my current B450 Tomahawk Max and 5800x to a B650 Aorus Elite AX V2 with a new 9800x3D. I’ve spent time reading previous forum discussions about motherboard changes, and it seems a clean Windows installation and SSD formatting would be best. I’m unsure what files or updates to download for the USB drive—I’ve got the media creation tool ready, but should I also get the BIOS updates and drivers? Is there a specific order?

My main worries are:
- What software do I need to install on the USB?
- Should I format the SSD before using it on the new board?
- Will the Windows installer handle the media creation tool automatically, or is that done afterward?

I’ve changed most components over the past 4–5 years, mostly following video or written advice. The BIOS and Windows steps are confusing me, so I really don’t want to risk anything. I just want to avoid complications after swapping everything. Thanks for any guidance!

What concerns you about browser bookmarks? Any emails stored on your hard drive? It depends on how you handle your passwords... wherever they might be. I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the sequence of steps. You could update the BIOS right away, even without a CPU, if your motherboard allows it.

Before putting things together, visit the manufacturer's website and download the latest chipset and Ethernet drivers. You can also get the newest BIOS, though I wouldn't necessarily install it unless you need to. There are likely many files available that aren't essential. Windows should automatically install an Ethernet driver, but if that fails, you can use one from the website.

I'm most worried about whether any of my new hardware is damaged or dead. Get into the BIOS right away and check for anything unusual—temperatures, RAM size and speed, fan settings, etc. You don't need to modify your SSD before trying to install. When you boot from the USB Windows installer (with only one drive connected), it will list just that one drive and its partitions. Remove all of them manually, leaving just "unallocated space," then let the installer create new partitions as needed.

It remains the same operating system installation.
A slightly different method for setting it up.

It's straightforward. You're getting your sanity back, so what's the point? I've used Rufus when necessary.

the only thing you really need is the ethernet/wifi driver. it's probably not necessary, but without it you can't do anything else. the rest can be obtained from a windows update or downloaded later if needed.
prepare your install usb drive and install the required drivers, and you'll be ready once you reach the desktop.
