The license stays intact on the old storage device. It functions across five computers simultaneously. The MS licensing approach isn’t very clever, in my opinion. You could even use the same drive in your updated system without reinstalling the operating system—everything would operate smoothly (or you could clone the old drive onto the new one). Of course, I recommend updating drivers if you choose that path. I’ve been exchanging the identical drive between different computers for five years without any problems. It’s just as impressive to others.
