I checked the task manager a short time ago and the reported speed was 3.96, while the maximum speed listed is 3.5. It seems there might be a discrepancy. Could you confirm if this is related to factory settings? Also, did the CPUID test show 4 GHz as desired? Your question is helpful.

I checked task manager about two seconds ago and the speed shows 3.96, but the maximum is 3.5. Is this related to factory settings? I also ran a CPUID test and it reported 4 GHz (the value I was aiming for). If someone could clarify what’s happening, that would be really helpful.

It might be connected to the turbo mode of an Intel processor. Sharing the CPU make and model could provide better guidance. There are various methods to suppress turbo and keep the system running at full capacity, but power settings automatically reduce performance when needed. It makes no sense to run a CPU at maximum speed just for 5 mph. A CPU frequently adjusts its speed.

If someone could clarify what’s happening, it would be greatly appreciated.

It might be connected to the turbo mode of an Intel processor. If you can share the CPU make and model, I could offer more specific guidance. There are various methods to suppress turbo and keep the system running at full capacity, but power controls exist to prevent overheating even at lower speeds. It makes no sense to run a CPU at maximum power when it’s only moving at 5 mph. A CPU will automatically adjust its speed based on demands unless manually changed.

Last time I checked task manager A the speed was 3.96 while the maximum is 3.5. Is this about factory settings? I also ran CPUID and it showed 4 GHz (which matches what I need).
If anyone could clarify what’s happening, that would be really helpful.

It might be related to the turbo mode of an Intel processor. If you can share the CPU make and model, I could offer more specific advice. There are several ways to disable turbo and keep the PC running at full speed all day, but power settings automatically reduce performance when needed. No need for a full throttle if it’s only going 5 mph. A CPU will adjust its speed based on requirements unless you change the settings.
I have an i5-4690k trying to reach 4 GHz and my motherboard is an MSI Gaming 6 Z97.

Deniedstingray shared some insights:

The speed reported in Task Manager was 3.96, while the maximum listed was 3.5. It seems to be about factory settings. CPUID also showed 4 GHz, which matches what I need. If anyone could clarify what’s happening, it would be greatly appreciated.

A potential cause might be the turbo feature on an Intel processor. Knowing the CPU make and model could help provide better assistance. There are various methods to disable turbo and keep the system running at full capacity, but power settings can limit performance when needed. It makes sense to avoid pushing the PC to full throttle if it’s only operating at 5 mph. The CPU adjusts its speed based on requirements unless manually changed.

I own an i5-4690k aiming for a 4 GHz performance. My motherboard is an MSI Gaming 6 Z97, with a maximum speed of 3.9 GHz. You’d need to manually overclock it in BIOS—changing the multiplier from 39 to 40 should work. Currently, my CPU is running at only 800MHz while the GPU, RAM, and other components are active.

Switching Power Options to High performance would prevent it from relaxing and keep speeds around 3.9 GHz. My 4690K is functioning as expected.
