Hey everyone, I've configured an OpenVPN server at both my place and my girlfriend's, so we can reach our home servers for work and media access. Both use Asus RT-AC86U routers with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. The problem is the speeds are extremely slow—home connection is 1Gbps/300Mbps, hers is 600Mbps/200Mbps, and we're getting around 40Mbps max. Even with AES-256-GCM encryption, it feels much slower than expected, especially for larger files. I'm curious if others have faced the same issue. Any solutions or recommendations? If not, we both have TrueNAS home servers; I was thinking about moving the OpenVPN server there (one has an i7 4770, the other an i5 10400F). Would a more powerful machine help? Should I look for a setup guide for an OpenVPN server on TrueNAS?

Choosing UDP comes with pros and cons. You need to adjust your configuration for better performance. The instructions I used long ago won’t guarantee success.

Thank you for your reply. I've attempted the TCP method without success. Perhaps configuring the VPN on the server will yield better results.

The router's processor might not handle encryption well. VPN tasks are quite demanding, and regular home routers aren't very fast. Turn off the VPN on the router, then connect your device directly through the router to your TrueName box. This could help resolve the issue.
