I bought a Ubiquity cloud gateway fiber and AP, thinking it would be easy to set up the PPOE, enter login info, and switch away. After some tweaking of IPs and MAC addresses, I still can't get the gateway online with my ISP Ethernet cable. Right now I’m only using the UGC-fibre connected via an old modem, which makes things worse. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
It depends on the type of internet connection you're using. For Fiber, ISPs usually offer a standard ONT with Ethernet connectivity. Some provide a combined ONT/Router and require using IP pass-through or bridge mode to disable the router. With Docsis Coax service, a standard cable modem is needed. If you use a gateway, it should operate in bridge mode. DSL behaves similarly to Docsis Cable. Based on what you're seeing, you likely have a gateway or modem/router combo, so you'll need to choose the best option according to your ISP's rules.
Reach out to your ISP for guidance on setup and troubleshooting. Based on Vodafone’s example, other providers likely face similar challenges. You’ll need a router certified by Openreach, and you should contact your ISP for login details. It’s usually simpler to use the router already supplied by your ISP and configure it as a modem, connecting your devices directly—this should work smoothly without extra hassle.
Thank you for the help. My ISP offers an ONT that delivers fibre to ethernet. I thought I could simply connect the Ethernet port directly to the gateway, but I'm having trouble with the PPOE settings. It keeps showing "no internet" and redirects back to the ISP modem/router, which seems normal.
Looks simpler now. I’ve got the login info from my Zen account, and it seems the local network runs on CityFibre, which seems to work better with your own setup compared to OpenReach.
