Hello, I’m looking to set up a Minecraft server for myself and friends. I want to know how safe it is to use port forwarding and whether it’s possible without it. Can I avoid port forwarding altogether? What are the best practices to make this secure while protecting my computer and others on the network? Would restricting access to just friends add extra security? Could using a virtual machine help contain risks if something goes wrong? Is it safe to whitelist only certain people? Should I lock the server behind a VPN and require a login before joining? For someone new like me, is running a server realistic for potential threats? Please clarify any mistakes—I’m trying to understand this better. Thank you!

Back then, I hosted Minecraft servers for my friends using LogMeIn Hamachi. It allowed us to create a password-protected VPN so they could join the server as if they were on our local network, without needing any port forwarding.

Use a single open port for safety, redirect traffic to it, and avoid leaving many unused forwarded ports. Also, create a whitelist on your server if you're targeting a small group of players.

I've never worked with a Minecraft server setup, though I've used Cloudflare tunneling to forward ports for my Jellyfin server. Unlike certain VPNs (not sure if this applies to all), Cloudflare tunneling is built to manage server traffic.
