Configure your home Wi-Fi network
Hi, I'm moving from an apartment to a house and worried my single router might not cover enough. The floor plan shows the modem on the top wall and a cable leading out. I think placing another router near the modem could help, but I want to make sure it works well. Questions: Does this setup make sense overall? Are there limits when using two routers on the same network? I'm new to this and haven't set up anything before. Should I stick to one brand/model or split the setup like a switch and AP?
Your residence is longer than it is wide according to your floor plan. For best WiFi performance, I recommend splitting the house’s width into three equal parts and positioning two wireless access points at the middle intersections of those sections (perpendicular to their current layout). This way, WiFi signals will stay focused inside your home where they’re most needed. You’ll need just two access points. If you don’t want a single device to handle both router and AP functions, assign the same network name to each but set them on separate channels with distinct channel widths. Some users prefer using the same SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz devices, though it’s better to have different ones so specific equipment connects to the right band. Many access points support band steering, but its functionality varies. If you mean a modem instead of a combo device, you won’t need an extra router unless your setup requires it. In that case, having enough physical ports lets you wire multiple APs directly without relying on a separate router. Simply disabling the wireless radios and connecting the access points via Ethernet is a straightforward alternative. A wired connection will always outperform Wi-Fi in speed and stability.
