I've never experienced it functioning properly, even after switching PCs and updating them simultaneously—it always pulls content from the web. It's quite bothersome since I've confirmed it's turned on across all devices. As you mentioned, with a Gigabit connection it would seem unnecessary unless you're under a data limit.

The main reason I need to change is due to a poor choice I made when purchasing an LRT214 in 2015. It causes the router to crash when using the VPN and only manages around 15 mbits per direction. I’m hoping for a PFSense device that can last at least ten years. I’m frustrated with both consumer and small business products, especially with the SSD setup—why not use RAID 1? Have you ever experienced an SSD failure in this situation?

I’ve got several dead SSDs. Raid 1 would be a smarter use of the budget than buying a Gen 4 NVMe drive. That speed wouldn’t be used effectively. I’d probably pick something like a Dell R220 or R230. They’re affordable, fit easily in racks, and have solid built-in components. How much VPN bandwidth do you require? I still feel the hardware is overkill—I’ve had gigabit routing on older i3s before, so it doesn’t demand much power.

All available bandwidth should support around five clients simultaneously, each using roughly 200 Mbps up and down. There’s no rack required; full tunnels are preferred. I opted for a slim case to fit into a compact closet—no longer than 6.5 feet and about 1 foot wide. The space is small enough to hold a NAS, UPS, phone equipment, and alarms. My budget is very adaptable. I prioritize long-term reliability and high availability. As a computer science student with security interests, I plan to run Suricata on the system as well.

So basically I’ll stick with the stock cooler, those slim art deco ones don’t stand out much. The CPU shouldn’t face much stress here anyway. Grab two more budget SSDs, performance isn’t a priority, though having RAID 1 would be handy.
