Configurations for memory channel setup
I've noticed an unusual memory setup on your system—two groups of RAM with distinct slot colors. You have the 2x1GB sticks in white slots and the 2x256MB sticks in black slots. Do you really need both in each color? It functions well as is, but having one of each might be better for reliability. Let me know if you'd like advice!
Combining rams this way isn’t likely to succeed, regardless of the same maker or line. Each capacity varies a bit and probably won’t align well. If it does, then it’s effective. The safest bet is to keep your sets coordinated in their dual channel slots. Earlier boards indicate this through color coding.
If it functions then just let it be. I think upgrading with a stronger CPU would help—something like a low-quality 65nm C2D processor could boost performance compared to the Pentium, and you might be able to find them at a very reasonable price today. It’s unclear how well they’d fit with older components like Wolfdales, especially given the outdated chipset (945g) which seems limited in compatibility.
Only works with Pentium 4 series CPUs, not Core 2 architecture. Acceptable for this model since it's a Pentium 4 HT with two threads and a solid 3GHz clock speed—performs well for light tasks. Upgrading to a Pentium 4 HT 651 from a 631 might be possible, but I'm unsure if the power supply and cooling system in the small case would support it.
Netburst really falls short compared to C2D, though you might manage an E4X00 or a Pentium E2X0 CPU for better performance. The P4 chips are powerful overclockers—just boosted my 631 to 5.6GHz on air with my P5Q, BIOS only, and I’m just joking because I can xD.
Yeah, P4's are great overclockers. I got that one on a different board that's not a Compaq business PC to a good 4.3 stable on both core-ish things. I'd upgrade it however for literally just video playback it rarely hits over 50%. My main concern is the passive geforce 210 that is right behind the hot P4's exhaust so runs 80c idle, close to 100 load lol
Place a tiny fan nearby and it should help a bit. Unfortunately, the P4s are just terrible—Netburst doesn’t perform well, it lacks a core, and they run extremely hot. Plus, their multis are way too low to make it work.
