Hi guys, So in order to update my jank, 8-something year old PC for quaranteen gaming, i bought some new DDR3 ram. This is what I had before, bought like 8 years ago: 8 gb (4+4) DDR3 CL9 (full name: Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1600MHz 8GB, Kit w/2X HyperX 4GB DDR3, CL9-9-9-27, 240pin) This is what i bought new now: 16 gb (8+8) DDR3 CL9 (full name: Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1600MHz 16GB 2x8GB 1600MHz DDR3 CL9) So, heres the questions: A) What is the best combination of installed RAM? I can choose from: 1. Only installing the new set of ram (8+8 dual channel DDR3 CL9, total of 16 gb), or 2. Installing the new ram + one of the old sticks (8+8+4 DDR3 CL9, total of 20 gb) B) Due to jank cooling solution of CPU, one of the sticks is EVERY SO SLIGHTLY bent (i cant stress how little it is bent, but ye its bent). How big of a problem is this? Everything starts and runs. Ofc, bigger ram is better, but do I loose the dual channel mode of the 8+8 if I have the third stick installed? Would it make more sense to simply remove the third, 4bg stick and just run with 16 gb? Everything is running at 1600 MHz. Due to a jank cooling solution for my CPU, i simply can't install the last stick. Thus, i'm stuck with either 16 gb or 20 gb. 24 can't happen. If it matters, here's the mobo and processor i'm using: CPU: Intel® LGA1155 Core i7-3770, Socket-LGA1155, Quad Core, 3.4Ghz, 8MB, Boxed w/fan Mobo: MSI B75MA-P45, Socket-1155, m-ATX, B75, DDR3, 1xG3-PCIe-x16, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0, VGA, DVI, UEFI

Running three sticks is perfectly fine as long as they function properly. If you require additional memory, use it. They might now default to JEDEC DDR rates instead of the listed speeds on the sticks, causing them to operate at the slowest stick's speed.

Discussing speed usually refers to MHz. All devices operate at 1600 MHz.

For simplicity, I'd just run the new pair unless you need extra 4GB. Or try a stable mount that uses all four sticks.

Yes, you're talking about MT/s. Most DDR3 systems default to PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333), which equals 1333 MT/s. Depending on your CPU or northbridge, the actual speed might vary. Since all your modules are DDR-1600, it's likely to run at that rate. In reality, the difference won't be significant unless you require 20GBs; otherwise, it shouldn't matter.

You might achieve better stability by rolling 16G, avoiding uneven mixing between banks.

The 3rd Gen Intel chips will actually utilize both channels for the available amount, then switch to single-channel for the remaining capacity in an asymmetric configuration. Proceed.
