If you purchase a board with three NVMe slots or a 4x NVMe AIC offering 16x connectivity, you don’t necessarily have to worry about PCIE lanes. Modern GPUs typically don’t push PCIE limits, so directing 16 lanes to multiple NVMe drives and routing 8 to the GPU is feasible—this setup can yield around 24 lanes, matching the capabilities of a 5950x. Having lane restrictions won’t significantly impact overall performance, especially since your usage is mainly for gaming, writing, and occasional video editing. You’re unlikely to experience simultaneous full utilization of all drives. Unless you’ve implemented a complex NVMe array, the risk of hitting lanes is minimal. It’s probably safe to let the motherboard handle auto-configuration, even if each drive only gets one lane. Unless you encounter unusual demands, it shouldn’t matter much. Your priority seems to be avoiding SATA or HDD usage and securing enough space for your needs, which aligns well with a NAS for long-term storage.
This section isn't accurate. You can operate a 4-lane NVMe on a single lane at reduced speeds, similar to how you can run a graphics card on fewer or older lanes most of the time. The drives will function (provided the hardware supports it) as long as compatibility exists. My goal is to find the best configuration. I haven't verified this recently, but 4TB NVMe units were much more costly than smaller sizes, making it cheaper to buy two 2TB drives than one 4TB. I could also keep sensitive data on my NAS, use one NVMe for Windows and two in RAID 0 for other tasks... or run all three or four drives in RAID 0 or 5 for speed or backup instead of relying on a single 4TB drive. You won't be doing long waits or burning out the system, but knowing you can is part of the enjoyment.
