Avoid overspending on the CPU when your GPU isn't delivering the expected performance. If you're building for each person in the room, it's wise to stay cautious with component choices. The top-tier Nvidia and Intel combo offers great performance but comes at a cost. I agree on that point. Productivity often plays a key role in component selection. I get what you're saying, and I respect your perspective.

Why APU? Clarify your thoughts. If you're planning a permanent upgrade, this isn't just a quick fix. For multiple systems, a 1080 series is a solid pick—especially if budget matters. A high-end i7-7700K sounds tempting, but it's pricier. The real debate comes down to core count, threads, and performance needs. It's not about cheapest, but what fits your goals. Let’s focus on what you value most.

He aims to purchase around eight machines. The APU handles games well and keeps the power setup modest. With GPU prices dropping or miners selling off GPUs, you can easily find eight RX 580s or 1060s with 6GB each at a good price and just discard them.

Estimated cost for an APU build under $400 without a display is around $400. For an i3 8100 with GTX 1050ti, expect about $600. The PCPartPicker list provides detailed components at various prices. Merchants offer similar items with slight differences in pricing. Overall expenses range from roughly $521 to $589 depending on selections.

Include a 70$ Crucial MX500 250GB drive to boost startup time and enjoy a couple of games on that SSD.

Let’s focus on improving your setup. Consider adding more dependencies or adjusting configuration files for better performance.

Believes Linus made a video about a multiplayer gaming setup. For such setups, consider borrowing money and selling your assets.

Watch Linus' setup in a single video. He ran Unraid as the host OS, enabling GPU passthrough for all VMs. Keep in mind it needed a dedicated video card per VM. Expect high costs if you aim for demanding graphics in modern games. You'll need a powerful CPU with many cores and ample RAM. If budget becomes tight, linking consoles might be a better option. I experimented with Unraid on a compatible PC and found extra steps needed to get Nvidia GPUs through properly—possibly due to restrictions from the manufacturer. My GTX 780 struggled significantly in passthrough, while my older 6870 handled it smoothly.

It really comes down to the GPU specifications. The 4x 1080Ti and i9-7980XE are solid choices, but with eight users each using two games simultaneously, the load could strain the system. You should verify performance under those conditions before deciding.

The CPU needs to perform well. If the setup supports six players, each gets three cores. The graphics cards will be challenging—one GPU per virtual machine is required. For 1080TI, you’ll need double-slot cards that can quickly fill a motherboard (typically only four slots max). I think Linus used a single slot AMD card during his demo. A powerful power supply will also be necessary.
