Distance is considered if it allows things to work better. Cables are grouped and placed either under floors or in ceilings, making switches more flexible. If switches are inside rooms, a wall-mounted cabinet is necessary, plus you'd need to patch everything from there using a ladder, which can disrupt users. Dedicated networking spaces are preferable when possible, though not always feasible. Generally, a higher-end switch is used for servers, connecting to either a distribution switch or directly to the server switch. A distribution switch acts like a Layer 3 switch, usually fiber-based (SFP+ or QSFP+), while remote cabinets connect other switches. The diagrams suggest a combined server and distribution switch works, but separate lines should be used for client connections.
