From what I understand, the X670 motherboards won’t be available at launch. I’m aiming to get a Zen 3 processor right away, but I might have missed something in my plan. I bought an Asus ROG Strix X570-E today because a motherboard is better than nothing, and the new ones are selling fast. However, I’m worried it might not work properly. AMD said they’d provide support with a simple firmware update, but I don’t have a processor that matches the board’s requirements. Can I actually use it without an older Ryzen chip, or will I need a different processor for it to function?

The board includes a BIOS flashback feature, eliminating the need for a CPU to perform the update. You only require a USB drive with the appropriate firmware, power the board, and adhere to the provided instructions for the flashback process.

AMD released an update that included support for Zen 3 chips prior to their official launch. This means boards that came with that BIOS can boot with a Zen 3 processor right away. If the board shipped with an older BIOS, it features a flashback button to update the BIOS without needing a CPU replacement.
