I have just built a setup with the i5 13600k and the Noctua NHD15 and have been trying a few games out. My first choice was to try out Minecraft on completely max render distance and simulation distance (36 chunks) and the CPU temperatures peaked at 85 degrees celsius. I am just wondering if this is an expected temperature or if I have anything to worry about?

85c fits perfectly within the requirements for the i5 13600k, no worries there. The 13600k through 13700k and 13900k models tend to run quite hot. You might want to check for improved case ventilation or boost the NH-D15 fan speed in BIOS to handle higher loads at 80c+. Still, 85c is completely acceptable.

You're accustomed to the i7 7900K with an AIO cooler, so these figures caught your attention. I'm keen to examine the fan curves and airflow.

If you're using the low noise adapter with the NH-D15, it shouldn't raise the fan speed too much to maintain quiet operation. Even with the 9900k running at 80-90°C during gaming, they used a lower-tier toothpaste for thermal protection under the IHS. For better results, try pushing the fan speed higher at 75-80°C while keeping it audible-free. You don't need to run the fans at full speed.

Additionally, temperatures exceeding a certain point cause the CPU to reduce performance, so you shouldn't be overly concerned about those readings.

Considering 8th gen, 9th gen and later designs feature solder between die and IHS.

I realize now, I had the wrong memory. I also had a 6600k. Still, the 9900k was a powerful chip running at 95w.

Just a quick note, I’m seeing the same CPU temps around 100°C during Cinebench runs with my Noctua NH-L9i cooler. That’s unusual—should I be concerned? Thanks for your early updates!

The 100C CPU is overheating and may be at risk of damage. Check the cooler thoroughly—ensure it’s installed properly, verify the thermal paste is correct, confirm the cooler rotates smoothly. If issues persist, consider replacing the cooler or trying a different one.
