Hello! I'm looking into my plan to upgrade my computer. I'm replacing the main parts like the CPU, motherboard, and graphics card. I'm wondering if I can still boot from the same drive after upgrading the motherboard and CPU. Also, I've heard that if you remove any drives without Windows-related files, you can power them off and then plug them back in to restore everything. Do you have any confirmation about this? I'm upgrading from an i5-8600K on a GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS GAMING 3 to an i5-13600KF on a GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR4. I'm concerned about driver issues for the CPU and motherboard. I don't have any other drives except Windows. Please let me know if this is correct.

The OS installation will complete successfully, but you’ll have to turn Windows back on after it finishes. You’ll require the Windows activation code for this process. Disconnecting storage devices is common during setup or updates. If the reactivation succeeds smoothly, you likely won’t need to reinstall, which means you probably won’t have to disconnect drives again.

Sure, finding the key is fine, but it doesn’t solve the issue of driver problems.

Windows handles most tasks efficiently. It often leaves old drivers intact, which is why a clean install is usually preferred, though not always necessary. If you proceed carefully, make sure to back up vital files from your OS drive and disconnect any additional drives. It’s not strictly essential, but doing so can ease the process during an upgrade and feel more reassuring.

I believe I should reinstall Windows 11 to ensure no old drivers cause issues with the new ones. However, resetting your PC means disconnecting the storage devices to preserve your games and files, right?

You're wondering if everything will work smoothly once the additional drives are installed.

For a fresh start, reinstall using a new USB image instead of resetting. Clearing Windows doesn’t really improve things and may do nothing more than leave things unchanged. The problem with a fresh install is that all programs will need to be reinstalled too. Your drive data remains intact and should appear normal once connected again. But if you reinstall Windows, some apps won’t show up in the registry at all.
