Computer fails to boot and activates when power supply is engaged
I built this computer around six years ago and it stopped working a couple of months ago. Now, when I connect it and switch the power on, everything turns on without any issues. It doesn’t flicker or post either. I’ve tried connecting the HDMI port on the GPU, the motherboard, and even the power supply, but none of those fixes worked.
The specs are: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 motherboard, Corsair CX500 power supply, AMD A10 5800K APU, PNY GTX 660 GPU, PNY 260GB SSD, WD Blue 500GB hard drive, PNY 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1866 Kingston 8GB DDR3, and 1600MHz. I know mixing two RAM sticks of different speeds can cause problems, but I’m not sure how that might relate here.
I’ve cleaned the whole thing with two bottles of dust, checked all power connections, and even disconnected the case power controls—it didn’t help. I’m unsure what to do next and am considering taking it apart completely to see if I can fix it.
Clear CMOS, start with one stick of RAM, then test a different PSU. I notice that if the machine powers up right away when you switch the PSU on, it might mean the power supply is dead or failing. Unless the BIOS option to auto-start after a power loss is turned off, the PSU should simply keep the PC in standby mode.
