Sure, you should definitely play. Just let me know when you install AOE, and I'll guide you through the basics.
I noticed your system is an MSI board with the B450 chipset. Keep in mind, my earlier setup used a B450M Bazooka with an 1700 Ryzen (8-core, 4-thread) and a GT1030 graphics card. That combination was quite unusual since the GT1030 supports only 2-core CPUs, even the upgraded GTX1650S was built for 4-core processors. I’m talking about a mismatch that caused VGA POST issues when switching cards. Interestingly, swapping back to the GT1030 resolved the problem. However, installing the GTX1650S drivers and software through the GT1030 failed to boot properly, causing it to hang in POST. Eventually, it shut down completely and required a 35-45 day return process. They never explained the issue.
It’s worth noting that the original system was a pre-built unit, and sources suggest such units often have limited support for certain components. This raises concerns about long-term reliability. Later, when upgrading to the 5900X, MSI confirmed compatibility but warned that their own BIOS updates could damage the board and void any warranty. They seemed dismissive of users, which made me question their support.
After that, I upgraded to a B550 board for a fresh start. MSI’s guidance helped me update the BIOS, but they cautioned that their updates might break the hardware and no longer offer warranty. Given my experience, I’m not a fan of MSI products. Based on this, I chose a new build without MSI parts, sticking to Asus and Corsair components.
In short, for work or coding tasks requiring performance, a 5000-series processor is essential. If you prefer the B450 board, it’s probably best to opt for an eight-core Ryzen like the 1700, which remains strong today (the 5900X is about 46% faster). For software developers, moving up to a 5000-series makes more sense. If you stick with the B450, consider a B550 board instead.
In my opinion, MSI products carry some risk—especially with new boards—and I’d advise caution. One thing to watch is purchasing from NewEgg, as they’re currently under scrutiny for scams and negative reviews.
