I set up KDE on my elementary OS machine via the command line using sudo tasksel install kubuntu-desktop. It asked for a desktop environment choice. I selected SDDM and restarted, but it kept showing the elementary OS logo and wouldn’t boot into KDE. I assumed it was downloading config files, so I left it as is overnight. It was still stuck at that screen when I checked this morning. Is there a way to fix this before boot and switch to LightDM instead?

I think pressing the left shift key will show the boot choices for grub. You can select safemode, which will start the default elementary OS build. Or you can press the escape key after posting; otherwise it might take you to a BIOS menu instead of grub. Once in elementary, open a terminal and type "sudo systemctl enable lightdm". Let me know if this helps. I had a similar issue with Ubuntu. I’m guessing it should work... Grain of salt.

The left shift key isn't functioning on my laptop, and because the device isn't very reliable (micromax laptab lt777), the BIOS seems poorly constructed. I'm unable to select a USB drive to boot in order to reinstall the operating system since the BIOS doesn't recognize it. It was an inexpensive and outdated model. I'll experiment with other solutions, and if that fails, I'll consider replacing the laptop. Thanks for the advice!

If a fresh installation isn't impossible, you might consider this link: https://askubuntu.com/questions/995747/i...ve-to-a-di. They mention potential issues by trying it on another machine and transferring the drive, but it seems like the most viable option right now. Someone else might suggest a better approach, but that's what I have in mind.

OS elementary offers its own collection of tools and varies from the standard Ubuntu version you're familiar with. Switching to another distribution isn't as straightforward as using the official Ubuntu release.

No, there isn't a direct way to revert to lightdm3. The system doesn't support such a rollback option.

Expect limited performance from that setup. Go with Linux Lite instead.
