Yes, you can still be a strong player in competitive mode without using your microphone. You can still hear what others are saying even if you don’t turn it on. Not using a mic doesn’t necessarily slow down the team’s performance; it just changes how you communicate.

The reason I avoid using a mic is it limits my performance.

The family is generally quite loud, and my microphone isn’t great—it’s just a webcam mic.

Absolutely it slows everyone down. I wouldn’t compete without a mic. Players who stay quiet really frustrate me. Grrr!

I keep it light with folks who don’t use mics—just the basics. I really dislike when people type nonsense in games either. "There’s a guy here." Chat isn’t worth checking in CS. If you’re scrolling through chat, you might as well be gone.

Occasionally I use a quality microphone and don’t talk much.

I really dislike people who use a microphone in casual settings since they probably spam music or say nonsense.

It depends on whether you're in a high or low rank. I compete at high ranks on ESEA and am global on MM (it's easy to reach global). If you're in a high rank, it can be a challenge. But if you're outperforming your whole team, they should focus elsewhere.
