Competition among routers.
Competition among routers.
Hello, I'm considering updating my network since I'm only using outdated hardware. I've been watching various videos about Ubiquiti routers and noticed usg gateway and edgerouter. I don't see much difference between them, so I'm looking for someone who can clarify the basic concepts. If anyone has alternative router options or suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
I recommend checking Google, as the "edgerouter" is essentially a router for both personal and business use. If you're unsure about it, it might not be necessary. USG Gateway appears to be a term they're using for some tech, so neither product has a specific model—more research would be wise.
I'm using the model from ASUS I linked here, it's working great for me. Streaming 4K to my TV via Plex has no problems. It supports all my wired and wireless devices—most of them now use Wi-Fi, so the list is extensive. No need to restart anything; everything functions smoothly. I get full bandwidth either wired or wireless, up to 300 Mbps.
If you intend to play games or use VOIP, be cautious with EdgeRouter Lite as it may cause odd UDP behavior. Packets might not reorder properly, leading to strange lag or distortion.
Edgerouter functions as a self-contained router or firewall. Connect using a web interface or serial console cable for configuration. Offers more advanced capabilities than the USG (UniFi is rapidly closing the gap). Management occurs through UniFi controller software, which can be installed on PCs, servers, CloudKey, etc. Features a silver finish with attractive blue LEDs. Intrusion Detection remains in beta testing. Many of Ubiquiti’s UniFi routers use comparable hardware to the Edgerouter line. For stronger performance, consider the Edgerouter 4.
D. I wasn’t aware Ubiquiti sells it.
I don’t have enough budget for Edge Router 4

My aim is to achieve this. Both USG and Edgerouter Lite function effectively. For more complex features, I’d suggest going with Edgerouter Lite.
