Compatibility with CPUs and MOBOs of the older Phenom series.
Hello, I've recently explored bringing back my old, unused system from a few years ago. The motherboard is a GA-M56S-S3 from Gigabyte (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-...upport-cpu). When I checked compatible CPUs, I was surprised to discover that the supported list includes a quad-core processor. My main interest is a Phenom II X4 955, as it seems to be the most capable option available. It's also quite affordable and well-suited for its intended tasks. The issue is that the available BIOS version doesn't support a Black Edition (unlocked) chip, which has a higher TDP of 125W compared to the standard 95W. This might make sense because overclocked chips require more power than the motherboard can provide. My question is whether the BIOS will prevent me from using the unlocked version, and I'm also considering upgrading to a more powerful Phenom II X4 975.
It seems they might not be confident enough to confirm support for 125W CPUs on this board. It could start up or fail due to missing microcode, but performance likely won't be optimal. I haven't tested QVL specifications before.
You're concerned about this, but I believe the unlocked version of a supported chip should be included even if other family members don't.
