It’s my initial project with a PC build, and I’m using a list from PC Parts Picker. I’m choosing an IGPU since high-end graphics cards are costly right now. However, the site warns that the motherboard and CPU might not be compatible. Will this setup function properly?
Many motherboards offer BIOS Flashback, allowing updates without a CPU installed. You can transfer the BIOS onto a USB drive (often requiring FAT32 or exFAT format), connect it to a USB port (sometimes with specific markings), and press a button on the board. After 30 to 60 seconds, the BIOS should refresh, even without active processors in the socket. Check your motherboard’s specs to confirm compatibility. The B550-A Pro supports this feature, though the B550M Pro (MATX version) doesn’t appear to do so based on the images. Regarding your selection, here are some thoughts:
1. The 5700G includes a stock cooler—Wraith Stealth is compact but should keep the CPU cool. You might want to wait until you can invest more than $40 for a better option. Hyper 212 is a solid choice; it’s superior to the stock but not significantly pricier. Spending around $40 gives you decent cooling if you go higher (e.g., $50–60) with quality fans like Noctua or Scythe.
2. The Crucial P2 1 TB SSD uses QLC memory, which becomes slower after filling the SLC cache. For better endurance and performance, consider WD SN550 ($100) or WD SN750 ($119), both offering more durability and speed.
3. Seagate Compute series uses SMR technology, making writes and data overwrites slower. It’s fine for reading-heavy tasks but not ideal if you need frequent updates. If storage is your main concern, look into 4–6 TB drives—offering much more space at a lower cost per GB (around $0.03). You can find good deals like the Seagate Barracuda 4TB for $35 or the WD SN750 for $119.
4. If budget is tight, skip extra fans and go with a larger capacity drive. Upgrading the motherboard by $10–20 can improve value, and you can always add fans later if needed.
Each option has trade-offs between cost, performance, and longevity.
