I'm setting up a new gaming system to swap in for my current one with an i7-9700K and an old AMD Vega GPU. I'm considering the latest Intel Ultra 5 245 with an RTX 5070, but the I7 14700 is priced similarly to the Ultra 5. The i7 Gen 14 has 20 cores versus the Ultra 5, but it's buying an older CPU model. AMD's Gen 9 isn't worth considering due to its price range. What should be recommended right now?
Unless you intend to stream, you don't require more than eight cores for a gaming rig. Even then, the GPU's NVENC can manage it. I advise against going for a 245k. It doesn't significantly improve over an older 5800x3d in gaming. The 14700 offers better performance but has its own drawbacks, unless Intel's supposed solutions have been effective.
Both i7-14700 and Ultra 245 are expected to deliver similar performance.
Each should provide strong gaming capabilities with excellent single-threaded results.
To confirm, you're examining the non-K variant of each?
I don’t see any passmark ratings for the Ultra245 compared to the 245K.
What are the models of your current components?
If your DDR4 memory is adequate, the I7-14700 would be a suitable choice.
The over-voltage concerns from last year regarding 14th generation Intel processors seem to have been addressed.
This likely isn’t a big issue for non-K processors either.
I’d probably opt for the 245 model.
The 14700k model is quicker compared to the 245k. This difference remains consistent across non-K SKUs. A 12700k fits within roughly a 3% range from a 245k, making it suitable for gaming and much more affordable. Even a 14600k offers a superior value over a 245k, especially if you're open to the risks of 14th generation hardware. I haven’t found any solid reason to purchase Arrow Lake for a gaming-focused setup.
When new processors arrive, they usually demand some kind of updates.
This applies to both AMD and Intel.
Often it involves the motherboard bios, occasionally the chip microcode, and sometimes through Windows.
The ultra processors feature a fresh performance/efficient core setup, which means Windows must adapt.
The reviews I’ve found tend to cover the early days of launch.
I haven’t located any that are up-to-date.
I checked the Newegg user feedback for 1851 motherboards.
The majority were favorable, but they didn’t specify the processor model.
I believe most users opted for the stronger 265K and 285K chips.
A frequent positive note is the significantly lower heat output from Ultra.
The person asking should find the installation much smoother with the i5-14700 since the boards are now well refined.
Still, I expect Ultra processors will ultimately prove superior.
In China, the price is now 20% higher than 265k. 265k equals 280 USD, and while it's highly valuable at the moment, it hasn't gained widespread popularity yet. Choose 14600kf for PURE gaming instead of 245k.
I referred to the 14600k, since it's notably more affordable, slightly quicker, and maintains the same core count on both P and E cores. It should also consume less power compared to the 14700, while using no more than the 245k.
