hello I plan to update my 8gb laptop's 16gb ram memory the problem is that there is only one memory slot so I can only do it by connecting a 16gb module, the question is whether I should use a dual rank or single rank module Somewhere I think I heard that it improves performance when you don't have dual chanel, right?

Some laptops feature a memory module with one stick soldered onto the motherboard, while another slot holds a removable stick. If it currently holds 8GB, does the module you see contain 8GB or 4GB?

I'm not entirely certain if it matters.

If it has soldered memory, you can use dual channel. If not, single channel is the only option I suggest since the advantages of dual rank over single are minimal compared to dual channel.

the laptop has RAM installed, so likely if it was soldered to the board fully, it should already be using dual channel. otherwise, it probably only supports single channel, and the description confirms that option isn't available.

Take out the only RAM stick and test if it starts up. Review the memory specifications to confirm what was installed on the board.

But if I didn’t do it, I can’t solder it myself, right? So I’m just using a single channel.

Use CPU-Z to view your current CPU details, and check the memory section for information about RAM.

On contemporary single or dual-rank DIMMs, performance differences are minimal, aside from AMD-based systems that favor single-rank configurations. Visit Kingston Memory's site to pick your laptop and see which modules fit. Always verify compatibility before purchasing, as not every module will be accepted by the device.
