Good morning everyone, welcome! I'm a new poster here. The changes I'm focusing on include swapping out the Asus TUF Gamin X870 Plus with a Gigabyte RX 7800 XT and adding a second Gen 5 drive in the other Gen 5 slot. This will change the PCIe Gen 5 slot from x16 to x8. I'm curious—how much will this impact my graphics performance?

The 7800 XT is a PCIe Gen 4 GPU, meaning it will only utilize PCIe Gen 4 with the available lanes. If the PCIe slot is limited to 8 lanes, the GPU will operate on 8 lanes. I couldn't locate a test comparing it to PCIe 4.0 16 lanes versus PCIe 4.0 8 lanes, but I did find some tests using PCIe 4.0 16 lanes against PCIe 3.0 16 lanes. In theory, PCIe 3.0 16 lanes should match the performance of PCIe 4.0 8 lanes, allowing a rough estimate. However, I wouldn't rely heavily on this information since (a) I'm unsure about the video's credibility and (b) my reasoning might be flawed. Also, consider what CPU you're using—it could affect slot compatibility.

It seems you're concerned about optimizing your system performance. You might want to ensure your PC is configured for full board capacity. Regarding your SSD, if you're using it for gaming, consider switching to a PCIe 4.0 drive and placing it in the M.2_3 slot to avoid bandwidth limitations on the GPU.

I rely on PC for both professional and personal tasks, so I already have a Gen4 in M.2_3 for work and a Gen5 in M.2_1. I need another drive for storage and require the second PCIe port for additional USB connections for my front I/O on the Corsair 7000D Airflow 2024.
