Comparison of MSI B550 models: B550 Gaming Edge Wifi, B550 Carbon, and B550 Tomahawk.
I currently own a B450 Tomahawk Max paired with a Ryzen 3600 build, which is what friends recommended last Christmas. It works fine for the price I paid (£80), though I’m planning an upgrade. I need a Gen 4 SSD, a Gen 4 GPU, additional rear USB ports, a front USB-C header for my NXT X510, and something capable of supporting a 5950x in the future. The B550 Edge & Tomahawk costs the same (£159) and the carbon version is £10 more (£169). I’m open to stretching my budget if there’s a better option around £180, but I won’t consider anything in the X570 range and avoid boards with chipset fans.
The edge and the tomahawk share the same VRMs, but the edge performs slightly better in terms of temperature control. Spoiler: neither will fail, just pick the one that matches your needs and preferences, avoiding any extra costs for carbon.
I’d choose the Gaming Edge since having Wi-Fi is always useful. The Carbon doesn’t justify the added cost. You might also want to look at the MSI B550M Mortar—it’s a reliable option for around £130. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/RhrY...ortar-wifi
