I am planning to purchase a mini PC for myself.
What I intend to do:
- gain basic system administration skills
- study Kubernetes, Docker, and work on DevOps engineering projects (just to maintain my expertise)
- dba tasks
That’s what I considered.
I examined the processor:
k12 --> AMD Ryzen 7h 255 8C,16T
m3 --> Intel i5 12th Gen 4C,8T
m6 utlra --> AMD Ryzen 5 6600H, similar to Intel i5 12th Gen
The cores in the i5 12th Gen seem a bit limited. I’m aiming for something above 10t.
Since I’m from Nepal, finding exact hardware can be challenging. Your advice would be appreciated.
Budget? And what motivates the need for a mini-PC? Why not a complete PC or maybe a laptop?
You should be able to maintain your "skills sharp" just as well with a full system.
A complete system is probably easier to manage and less troublesome.
That's just my perspective on the issue.
Laptops will become costly. I have just lost my job. If I get a new one, I hope it comes with a laptop. There’s little value in buying one now. Instead, I’d prefer a used Lenovo ThinkPad if I ever need mobility during this uncertain period.
As mentioned, cockroaches can be an issue. Hiring an exterminator isn’t a one-time fix. For the price I’d pay, I might be able to acquire a more suitable mini PC.
The cockroaches aren’t that many at our place. They’re in the kitchen where food is available. Since we rent the house, occasional visitors can make it dirty, and we can’t always control their cleanliness.
I already have a monitor—it’s 20 years old but still functions properly.
So I’d be really upset if a cockroach caused a short circuit in my desktop.
I acquired a Gmktec M5 Pro (Ryzen 5700U, 8-core, 16-thread) and was pleased with it.
Switch to a K12 Ryzen 7 H 255 would be ideal. Consider adding 64GB RAM if possible, to support multiple virtual machines in a virtual setup. You'll also have the chance to connect an external GPU via Oculus Link later on.
