Hi guys, I am planning a new build for a friend and was wondering what you would choose. Pricing here in germany would be 289€ for the 5600x and 319€ for the 12600k. The problem is, I cant find DDR5 in stock currently, so I would have to use DDR4 for the Intel build as well. Mainboard are currently less available as well. The cheapest board currently is a msi pro z690-a ddr4 @189€, compared to about 110€ for AM4. so The difference is about 100€ while only using ddr4 for alder lake. Does anybody know, how the performance on DDR4 is? I only saw reviews using DDR5. Thanks for your thoughts

In the few benchmarks I reviewed, gaming performance didn<|pad|>'s show no impact yet. It could improve when latency is reduced, but right now it mainly depends on how much data moves, not just speed. The gap between DDR4 and DDR5 is currently similar. Keep in mind the added expense of a better cooler—expect an extra €50 to €100. If you're comfortable using Windows 11, I recommend going with the 12600k. It offers about a 5800x performance boost on multiple cores, but struggles with single-core tasks. If you're willing to pay the extra and tolerate some early issues, it's definitely worth it.

It seems to be a roughly six-year-old alienware laptop. I don’t have the current specifications. My friend, who’s helping me build it, hasn’t replied yet. I’m sure it will be LoL, but I don’t know what others are playing.

Anything that offers the best value is essentially identical in terms of performance.

Even using DDR4, 12600k remains a strong choice. Since I’m on mobile, links often get distorted, but Gamers Nexus did a comparison. It doesn’t matter which is cheaper; DDR5 isn’t necessary for Alder Lake.

Regardless of the path you choose, your friend won't be let down by the CPU performance. A 12600K isn't just a strong CPU anymore; it still stands up well for gaming and basic productivity tasks. The lower cost of DDR4 makes it a clear favorite for Alder Lake now and likely for the future unless you need high bandwidth for professional work. Games usually perform better with lower latency, which is what DDR4 offers currently. I think Raptor Lake will be the first generation where DDR5 could become relevant.

5600x remains a solid CPU choice. A 12th-gen processor offers improvement, though the gain isn't substantial.

5600x advantages include lower costs and broad compatibility across devices. Offers ample cooling solutions and efficient power usage. Delivers strong performance in gaming, especially at higher resolutions. Excels in productivity tasks with quicker multithreading. Supports newer DDR4 and PCIE standards. Ideal for users prioritizing speed and efficiency.

5600x disadvantages involve reduced gaming performance, slower productivity work, higher power draw when fully loaded, and compatibility challenges with some games. The price for the features can be steep, and it may not suit all hardware configurations.

According to my findings, the 12600k performs quite poorly on the 5600x display. I mean it's really struggling there.
