So how did you come to this? You remember the 4790k was solid back then, but now your pre-built Dell has a failing or problematic motherboard, making an upgrade seem necessary for better performance.

I figured it out after slapping the 360mm rad Corsair AIO and ASUS Z370 gaming-e motherboard. I often blue-screened to check the problem, and then everything improved once I took out the old Intel Tim. It reached a steady 5.2GHz. The 8086K was set to boost up to 5GHz, but I never managed to push it beyond that. If Intel could promise a reliable 5GHz overclock for all its CPUs, they’d market it as a base clock of 5GHz and sell it more broadly, rather than targeting the limited overclockers market.

Which titles are best? Understanding CPU bias and how each core count impacts performance would help. Since we're still discussing whether to go with the 8700k or explore AMD choices, clarifying the target outcome is important.

It makes sense now. The board power phasing isn't great without air cooling, so you'll need proper hardware to handle it. Apologies if I overlooked that. Could you clarify what you have available today? Switching from the 4790K to the 8700K feels less appealing, especially with Zen 2+ and Intel's 10nm arriving soon. I’d prefer to wait another four months before these updates.
