Comparison of 5700x and 5900x with energy use
I didn't expect that, thank you. Honestly, having a 12-core CPU for the first time feels good, but my current project needs a lot of waiting during compilation. Extra cores would make a big difference there.
You're likely better off choosing an Alder Lake system. The 12700F offers strong performance for its cost, and selling your current CPU/motherboard as a pair would probably not be profitable enough to justify upgrading the whole setup.
I really don’t want to visit Alder Lake because it would push me toward switching to Windows 11. I’m not ready for that yet. I also don’t believe I’d earn much money with my old system. Probably around over 100€ for the mainboard and CPU. I wouldn’t want a locked CPU, so it should be a 12700k with a different board, which would both cost more. It could be the better option, but honestly, I’m okay going right now.
Windows 11 performs better with Alder Lake, but the 12700F can handle heavy CPU usage. You might hold off for the MSI B660M Mortar Max DDR4 release, which is expected to offer non-K overclocking options at a lower cost. Source: https://www.aroged.com/2022/05/30/msi-ma...interface/
I've read some reports on this from Roman Hartung (Der8auer), and it would be worth checking. The board seems to cost a fair amount due to the need for an external clock source. Edit: The article mentions around $200.
Most recent AMD or Intel chips offer about 40-50% boost per core. The performance gap between a 5600X and a lower-end model would be massive, especially with fewer cores. Running at 5700X or 5800X would feel much hotter than a 5900X. The 5900X spreads heat across two cores per complex, which helps manage temperature better, even though it has more cores/threads overall. I believe the 5900X is the better choice.
Heat shouldn't be an issue since I'm running a complete custom loop. Yeah, IPC has improved a lot compared to what I had on my chip five years ago. I'm planning to go with a 5900x. If it doesn't work on my board, I can just send it back. What would the signs of poor power delivery be?
I've built these custom setups for years. Not much better than what you have unless you're relaxing or pushing limits. My top performers are 2700X and 8700K—replacing them feels tough right now. I'm hoping AM5 gets announced, maybe a release in the second half of the year. The 5900X works well on budget B450 models like the Asus B450M-A, which seems to have 4VRMs. The CPU might slow down under high heat from those VRMs, reducing performance states.
