Hey there. I set up a fully vanilla Minecraft server in my spare room a few months ago and’ve been learning about admin duties. We began with an older R5-2600, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM and a slow SATA SSD. We upgraded to a solid Samsung NVMe drive and increased memory to 24GB for Minecraft. We also switched to a 3600X, aiming to boost performance and overall experience. Right now the server’s draw distance is 18 chunks. With my core group online, I can easily outpace the redraws. My thought is that a 3900X would likely perform better thanks to its double cache, even if the speed gain is modest. The clock speed would help a bit, but the cache difference should make a clear impact. I’m serious about testing it—wouldn’t hesitate to borrow an R9 if needed, and I’ll replace it if it fails.

We upgraded to a 3600X resolution from the previous 2600. Also edited on April 11, 2020 by Athos11 moved to the original message body.

Although the i5 might actually perform better, we don’t have that system and won’t switch. The transition from the 2600 to the 3600x was notable, so my focus is mainly on cache. Thank you for your input!
