Comparison of 16 GB and 32 GB RAM in virtual machines and gaming performance
How many virtual machines are there? Which games are being played concurrently?
It seems 4x8 is quicker than 2x8 since 4x8 functions like a dual rank, adding a slight advantage.
the only noticeable impact on performance comes from a minor increase if you choose the dual rank setup (either dual 16gb sticks or two 8gb sticks per channel). The biggest difference becomes apparent only when memory runs low—today I can get 32gb, whereas last year I regretted missing that boost. You’d also notice better results with RAM disk caching for specific programs.
It relies on whether your system uses less or more than 16GB at the moment.
I am running Window 2016 Server in Oracle Virtualbox for my Server course. I am dedicating 4 cores and 8192 GB RAM. Extra RAM might make the process smoother. I also use Linux operating systems (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora and Kali Linux) in a VM. Linux OS runs fast. However, Windows OS VM are a little slugish.32 GB RAM might offer a better experience. I am wondering if there will be much difference in games and video transcoding for my Plex account. I have a Nvidia GT 1030. However, I am planning to upgrade to a GTX 1050ti or GTX 1650. Just waiting for the re-release of the GTX 1050 ti for price comparison to GTX 1650. I use a 480 GB Kingston SSD and 2 TB WD Sata Harddrive and 1 TB WD external harddrive. This week I will order a 1-bay NAS with 4 TB Sata HD.
I suggest going with a 16x2 dual rank setup. Gaming tasks likely won't demand much memory or system resources, as your GPU might be the main constraint. You might need around 32GB, but 16 GB should suffice even with current technologies. There could be a slight performance improvement in some cases, though it probably won’t be enough to justify buying more RAM. It depends on your needs—decide if it’s worth it. If you plan to upgrade your GPU later, 32GB might be a better long-term choice.
If your overall memory usage is under 16gb, increasing to 32gb won't improve performance. Verify each VM's memory allocation; if it's insufficient, adding more memory won't yield benefits.
