The performance gap between 5GHz overclocking and stock speeds will be noticeable, but it depends on your system's ability to handle heat. A water cooler can help maintain stability at higher frequencies without overheating.

It varies by task and game genre. Certain games require more CPU power and gain from higher frequency. It also relies on GPU capabilities—overclocking isn't useful if your GPU is only GTX 960.

Based on reviews and benchmarks, a 5GHZ processor typically offers a 3-4% improvement (some games see no benefit, others up to 10%). Even an affordable Evo 212 for $25 can boost your 7700k to 4.8GHZ; going to 5GHZ or above will need significantly higher voltage, which increases heat and may require a more expensive cooler.

What impact on performance will there be by overclocking an i7 7700K to 5GHz compared to its stock speed? Will it be worth investing in a water cooler to reach 5GHz without overheating? Unless you purchase a pre-verified 7700K that promises 5GHz stability, there are no assurances you can achieve that. Even then, you must commit to using the same cooling method tested in those evaluations and follow the recommended voltages and BIOS settings. Some people simply avoid this approach. Silicon Lottery offers pre-tested CPUs for such purposes.
