Transistors play a key role in making GPUs and CPUs quick. The 9800X3D boasts 8,315 million transistors while the 7800X3D has about 11.27 billion, yet it performs better in productivity and gaming. I understand it has a slight MHz advantage over the 7800X3D, but does its much higher transistor count actually translate to more power and speed despite fewer transistors? Based on my understanding without chip expertise, yes—under normal operating conditions, the 7800X3D might not match the 9800X3D’s performance.

Performance depends solely on transistor count when evaluating within identical architectures. Differences in counts across architectures don’t indicate performance variations.

It seems the 7800X3D featured a complex design with many extra transistors due to the 3D cache. The 9800X3D underwent redesigns, positioning the 3D cache differently, which could explain the lower count.

Focus on performance and comfort. Creating or refining something often lets you enhance it with fewer resources than before. 9800x3D unlocks more than 7800x3D.

Some V8 engines don't always outperform V6 models. Greater size doesn't guarantee superior performance.

If there are nine different models, I wouldn’t invest in seven unless there was a big savings. Even then… well, that’s just my take.

TVR joins the conversation... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TVR_Tuscan_Speed_Six The focus isn't on power, but on velocity!

The V6 outperformed the V8 due to the inclusion of a Twin Turbo system in the V6 model.

There are discrepancies in the reported numbers. The transistor tally for the 9800X3D seems inconsistent with both the 9700X and the 3D V-Cache inclusion. Many references appear to mix data or omit key details. Based on logical checks from available sources, the Zen 4 to Zen 5 line with 8 cores contains approximately 1,745 million more transistors than the previous generation. The 3D V-Cache die in Zen 4 is estimated at around 4.7 billion transistors, while the 3D V-Cache in the 9950X3D stands at about 16.6 billion. If the 3D V-Cache count remains stable across Zen versions, the numbers for 9800X3D and 9950X3D should align closely with these figures. However, current reports don’t match this expectation, making verification difficult.
