^^^ Very good point. If you truly, truly have no budget, the new Threadripper stuff absolutely slaps. Although you will need watercooling to really push them at all. No guarantee that 4000 series will be compatible with current stuff. 3950X is already really damn good though, for gaming it's only equal with the 3900X though, but you get that 16c/32t flex. But again, with a lot less PCIe lanes than HEDT stuff.

You're correct about the TRX40 and X3950 compatibility. The new ThreadRipper should work with the current TRX40.

HEDT isn't primarily designed for gaming, and sometimes using more cores can actually lower frame rates. However, for tasks like workstation computing, video editing, coding, virtual machines, or 3D modeling, the additional cores offer advantages through parallel processing. You might want to look into the TRX40 and Threadripper if you're in that price range for a motherboard.

TRX40 represents a completely new chipset. Only AMD is aware of its compatibility with the next generation of thread ripper tools. It won't function with the 3950x, 3960x and higher models.

The latest 3960X and 3970X chips run independently, not working with the older 1000 or 2000 series TR chips. The 3950X uses AM4 form factor, which isn’t compatible with those older designs either. Right now, these parts aren’t leading in performance.
