If possible, use LAN whenever possible. Even if it requires running a cable through a wall. It's worth the effort. If hardwiring isn't an option, I'd choose PCI Wi-Fi over USB Wi-Fi. USB adapters usually only work with outdated laptops that have faulty Wi-Fi cards—those dongles cause issues and frequent drops. I'd go with an Asus PCI card because it offers the best native support for all operating systems, including Linux.

I've experienced success with solid options, such as Linux support (Arch managed it more effectively than Windows 10). The inexpensive ones, however, are quite disappointing.
