Hello, The company is evaluating new Lenovo T590 laptops and seeks your thoughts on a tailored configuration. They provide options with either an i5 or i7 processor, specifying the exact CPU model. The person in charge is keen about the i7, but upon closer look it seems more like a premium i5—both have 4 cores, 8 threads, same TDP. The i7 only slightly outperforms the i5 in single-core tests and overall performance, as shown by the benchmark link. The main advantage of the i7 is its higher turbo boost clock, which may not be essential for most office tasks. These devices will mainly serve email, document work, and light web browsing. One user might handle basic graphics with programs like Inkscape and Paint.NET. Opting for the i7 would add about EUR 231.11 per unit. Should I miss any factor that could justify the extra cost, or should I focus on persuading the manager to choose the i5?

You’re not missing anything—just an i5 should suffice for everyday tasks. Think about upgrading to an i7 only when the extra speed matters a lot.

Assess whether your CPU or a comparable older model performs well under demanding graphical tasks. Only proceed with intensive testing if it significantly impacts completion time. For budget-conscious small teams, opt for an i5 if extra performance isn’t essential and funds can be redirected elsewhere—like upgrading a coffee maker. If cost constraints exist and the investment won’t justify returns next quarter or year, look for faster delivery options. Otherwise, focus on real-world temperature data rather than just declared specifications. Consider whether the performance gap affects usability factors such as touchscreen responsiveness, resolution, battery life, or overall comfort for the team.

We currently have some older i5 models for desktop use, which works adequately for graphical tasks. We aren’t focusing on a strict priority list; instead, we’re updating our IT hardware and software to better fit the company’s needs. This process allows us to replace outdated gear without being constrained by budget or justification requirements. We can order only the T590s since they’re the only ones supported by our IT team, and we’re open to paying a premium for i7s if needed. While I don’t have specific data on heat output under load, it seems likely the i7 will run hotter on average due to its higher boost clock.

By default, each CPU is capped at 15 Watts. The amount of heat generated remains consistent between the two. Both will reduce performance and adapt their speed to stay within the 15 Watt limit over time.

The price gap between the i5 and i7 has significantly narrowed, falling from 231 to 31. That’s a noticeable improvement.
