I’m gathering some components for Christmas to give to my little brother so he can enjoy playing games. It’s not the most powerful, but it should work fine. I found an i5 3470 for $60 and an i5 2500k for $80. I’m not sure if these prices are fair considering they’re been around for a while. A video comparison showed them to be similar, though the 2500k might overheat and the 3470 could struggle under load. I’m trying to figure out which one performs better in terms of speed, temperature, and overall use. Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you planning to boost performance? If you push the 2500k, it will outperform the 3470. For a more budget-friendly option that stays within your limits without needing an extra aftermarket cooler, choose the 3470. In either case, they’re similar except the 2500k offers higher power and heat output.

2500k would require about 300mhz faster clock speed to beat the 3000 series CPU. 2500K can run at much higher frequencies than a fixed 3000 series i5.
