Hello! I'm looking into benchmarks and tests for how many simultaneous streams can be processed using Plex HW transcoding with these chips. Are there various quality options or is it limited? I'm planning a server upgrade soon and want to compare the 8750G and 8750GE performance, especially how the GE version handles AV1 transcoding. I'm also curious about the upcoming 8X50G(E) release and whether it offers better AV1 support. My priority is power efficiency, so I'm avoiding a CPU with a dedicated GPU like the Intel ARC A380 LP. I'm considering ECC RAM alongside non-ECC CPUs, possibly starting with an 8700G and adding ECC later if needed. Any insights or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

That's a valid point. Even the 7700 includes the complete media encoder/decoder block, which should ensure consistent performance. However, many reviews indicate AMD may not be the top choice initially, while Intel is often recommended for applications like Plex.

Hi @Alex Atkin UK, your response is appreciated. It seems the 7700 doesn't handle AV1: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/de/igpu-amd_r...cs_raphael whereas the 8700G works: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/de/igpu-amd_radeon_780m. Are there any Intel CPUs that support AV1 decoding and encoding with ECC, and also have a low TDP? From what I see, only the ARC graphics cards currently offer AV1 support. From an efficiency standpoint, an AMD iGPU might be a better choice.

Even top TDP Intel processors run at significantly reduced power when idle, thanks to the SoC’s efficiency. The 8700G features a solid monolithic layout that should consume far less power during standby compared to the 7000 series. So far, only one reference exists: a comparison noting its low idle consumption, which I find surprising. I haven’t tested my own media server with an i5 12400, though I don’t do heavy transcoding—I mainly stream via a TV that supports all codecs for Direct Play and runs on the same architecture as Arc GPUs. Generally, Intel decoding is more straightforward than AMD’s. On the flip side, AMD may offer future CPU upgrades, while Intel seems unlikely to release new boards for its current lineup. If you’re using a media server, would that be necessary?

The document mentions an updated version with ARC dGPU support for AV1 encoding. It notes that AMD hardware acceleration is now available without issues. The author plans to wait 3-4 months for the 8750G(E) release and is curious about simultaneous transcoding between the 7700 and 8700G models.
