So, I am the developer for a Minecraft Server, and as most Minecraft Server owners probably know, Minecraft Servers run almost exclusively on a single core (some things are offloaded onto other cores in some implementations, but the vast majority of the server is tied to the game's Tick loop, which only runs on a single core). Since we are in a glorious day and age where even the lowest end of AMD and Intel's mainstream offerings are 4-core, 4-8 thread processors, I've had a hard time finding an answer to this question: in this specific workload where I am running a single server instance, and therefore more or less the only thing that matters is having the best single-core performance possible, is there any value to having an i7 or i9 (let's say a 9700k or 9900k) vs. an i3 (specifically, an i3-9350kf)? I'm ignoring 10th gen for this example because there is no overclockable 10th gen i3 that I know of yet, so I'm trying to get closer to an apples-to-apples comparison in terms of hardware generation. To be more specific, I don't care about the cost of the CPU itself, rather I'm asking two specific things: 1) Does the fact that an i7 or i9 is a higher-costing (maybe inherently higher binned?) chip mean that it has inherently better single-core performance than an i3 of the same generation despite having more cores? From benchmarks I found that appears to be the case somewhat, but I'm not sure how well synthetic benchmarks translate into real-world performance. 2) Assuming I were to overclock the CPU that I bought (nothing crazy, I don't have experience with custom watercooling and I don't want to deploy a cooling solution that would require significant downtime to maintain), would a higher-end CPU overclock higher and more easily than an i3 because it's higher-end, or would an i3 overclock higher because it has less cores/possibly less TDP? Considering that temps would presumably be a concern since I don't plan on using exotic cooling, would I theoretically be able to overclock an i3 more than an i7/i9 with the thermal limits I'm imposing given the lower core count/TDP? I'm more or less asking for hypothetical answers, again I don't care about the cost of one over the other, I'm just trying to figure out what approach I should take when looking for a CPU for the sole purpose of getting the best single-core performance possible for my money and specific needs.

In AMD CPUs, performance improves with higher positions in the product line because of better binning. I think this applies similarly for Intel too; the i3 would match or even surpass the i9 in gaming since most games don’t need more than four cores. The main concern would be that newer i3 models are locked and can't be overclocked. If you're looking for the top gaming CPU from Intel, the 10600K overclocked is the best choice.

In AMD CPUs, performance improves with higher positions in the product line because of better binning. I think this applies similarly for Intel too; the i3 would match or even surpass the i9 in gaming since most games don’t need more than four cores. The main concern would be that newer i3 models are locked and can't be overclocked. If you're looking for the top gaming CPU from Intel, the 10600K overclocked is the best choice.

I see your perspective. I haven’t looked at AMD yet because their single-threaded speed is almost matching Intel’s, though it’s not quite there yet (perhaps the 4000 series will change). My needs don’t rely on the cost per thread that Ryzen offers. I do think the same binning strategy exists in Intel CPUs too. I’d probably prefer a 10600k over the current options, but I’m not sure if that’s what you’re asking. I understand the 10th gen chips are faster in single-threaded tasks, but I want to discuss it more generally for any Intel generation. For a typical Intel CPU, would it be realistic to overclock an i3 to beat an i7 or i9? Given similar cooling setups, the higher stock performance of i7/i9 might mean you always get better single-threaded results unless you can push them further. What really matters is how much the stock speed difference exists and whether lower TDP processors could offer more overclocking flexibility.

By nature, single-core performance of CPUs from the same generation focuses solely on frequency, ignoring core or thread counts. If an i3 can clock faster than an i9, the i3 takes the lead in single-core speed. High-end chips such as i7s and i9s usually use superior silicon, allowing manual overclocking to surpass an unlocked i3. Regarding cooling, when the task doesn’t require multiple cores, heat generation stays low. Therefore, the cooling needs for an i9 or i3 largely align based on your specific situation.

I focus mainly on modded single and dual-core titles, making single-core performance on Cinebench R15 more crucial than multi-core results. Only the latest i5 Intel chips rank near the top, while no i3 models come close. Ryzen XT processors appear higher than i5s in this ranking. https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/cpu_benchm...gle_core-7 I avoid Cinebench R20 since it emphasizes IPC more than speed. The newest Ryzen XT chips perform exceptionally well here and are worth checking if higher IPC matters for you. With the latest Windows update, my modded games using Havok Physics now crash frequently. Disabling overclocks resolves the issue. These overclocks have been active since 2018 without problems. I’m even thinking about upgrading to an i9 10900K—not for full overclocking, but to enable Thermal Velocity Boost for at least one core reaching 5.3GHz. This could be costly for older titles, but it would be exciting. I wouldn’t choose a CPU with four cores or fewer because it negatively impacts frame rates.
