7nm and 14nm aren't really worth debating. A newer smaller process does sound advantageous, but in the end it doesn’t change much. What counts is performance. To be honest, I upgraded to a 9900k after my 8700k stopped working a few weeks back (mobo died too, which also killed the CPU). Since gaming is my main use, that chip still delivers top-notch results. Its edge over AMD comes from its higher clock speed, and it supports 8 + HT for up to 16 threads. If you need more cores, AMD and Ryzen are the better choice. For pure gaming, a 9900k or even an overclocked 9700k gives the best raw FPS. Streaming or heavy multithreaded tasks? AMD usually wins, though the 9900k is still a strong performer.

During development, I focused on code and browsers. I believe AMD fits my needs better, though I’m concerned about the software problems I’m seeing.

I only have a 3700 but I built a few systems for mates with 3900x or 3950x and none of us faced problems. Personally, I’d lean toward Ryzen—just stick to what you’re familiar with if you’re concerned.

3950x can handle the 9900k workload during compilation, which makes sense from your perspective and should keep gameplay smooth with minimal noticeable impact.
